Whilst we live in a culture filled with music, many of the former certainties of traditional religions have slipped away. However, there remains a search for the spiritual, exemplified in the music of Sir John Tavener. Diverse approaches to the spiritual are situated within the great faiths, how can this diversity inform our understanding of the role of music in various spiritualties and wellbeing?

The Study Day aims to examine the place of music in this complex world, especially its role in wellbeing, through the insights of musicologists, composers, listeners, teachers, therapists and performers. One example might be a particular piece of John Tavener through the eyes of a particular person, where lived experience is valued.

26,000 species are now threatened with extinction, and few are more iconic than the rhino. In this gripping presentation from the front lines of South African rhino conservation, Amanda Smith will share her personal stories and explore factors underpinning the international trade in rhino horn. Strategies for mitigating its devastating impacts will be proposed. Amanda is living proof that ‘you don’t have to be wealthy or a conservation scientist to make a difference - you just have to have faith in your power to change things!’ Amanda will also provide key advice for anyone interested in volunteering in Africa.

Session four - The role of plant-based nutrition in disease prevention and reversal: challenges and opportunities.

Presented by Professor Shireen Kassam, Visiting Professor.

Diet and lifestyle is the top cause of death and disability in the UK. Up to 70% of chronic disease could be prevented through sensible lifestyle choices. This seminar will discuss the main dietary and lifestyle factors that cause our commonest chronic diseases. It will review the data supporting the role of a predominately plant-based dietary pattern in disease prevention and reversal. It will then explore challenges to the implementation of plant-based eating within clinical practice. The proposed course at the University of Winchester in plant-based nutrition will also be discussed. Email Penelope.Bates@winchester.ac.uk to book a place.

Room 9, West Downs Quarter, University of Winchester, Romsey Road, Hampshire SO22 5HT

How and why has this form of violence become so pervasive and what factors contribute to violence against women? In an attempt to answer this question, The Institute for Theological Partnerships (ITP) would like to focus more intently on the role of religion. The major religious traditions are all theological systems which many people believe have been instrumental in the process of gender control, to the detriment of women. ITP would like to open up a conversation about the role of religion in gender violence with the aim of raising awareness but in also providing some hope for a future free from violence against women.

Dr Elaine Storkey, philosopher, sociologist and theologian, whose presidency of Tearfund in aid and development spanned 17 years and influenced her most recent book, Scars Across Humanity: Understanding and Overcoming Violence Against Women. Dr Storkey will speak about the different forms of violence experienced by women across the world, and at the way they became institutionalised in cultural practices. She will also be looking at vital initiatives towards the elimination of these forms of violence and what we can all do to bring about change.

Please reserve your place for this talk by emailing brenda.sharp@winchester.ac.uk

Tea and coffee will be served in the Link Gallery from 6pm and the talk will begin at 6.30pm in room 9.
